“One of these things is not like the other” – Sesame Street.

“One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn’t belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?”

“Did you guess which thing was not like the others?
Did you guess which thing just doesn’t belong?
If you guessed this one is not like the others,”
“Then you’re absolutely…right!”

When TV4 (FOUR) was replaced by BRAVO on Sunday July 3 Sesame Street disappeared from NZ screens.

Something else went too – captioning.

BRAVO, New Zealands newest free to air TV channel has 0% captioning.

Is encouraging‘ the Broadcasters to caption working?!

BRAVO is a free to air channel owned by Media Works (owners of TV3) and is a partnership with US based NBC Universal.

In the US Bravo will broadcast with captions – required by law. The Real Housewives of Auckland will inevitably become a topic of discussion when it launches on BRAVO in August but won’t be accessible with captions, on TV or online. Real Housewives of Auckland not your thing? Perhaps home improvement is.

Another new free to air channel, focused on Home Improvements & Lifestyle (HGTV), launched June 27th. NO captions, on TV or online.

Is ‘encouraging‘ the Broadcasters to caption working?!

We’re calling on the government to make accessibility with captioning a legal requirement. Its important people can make their own choice about what they watch and when they watch it with captions – news, sports, documentaries, children’s and reality television. Make a submission to the Captioning Inquiry:

PS We are pleased to advise that BRAVO are looking to introduce captioning at some stage. No word on when this will be.
